Brett Shather

years at MSU: 5
Have you served on Staff Congress before? No
If so, how long did you serve?

The candidate was presented with the following questions. The responses are printed as received and have not been edited by Staff Congress.

1. Why would you like to serve on Staff Congress?
I see Staff Congress as a way to give back to the University. As a branch of MSU’s shared governance structure, I believe it is Staff Congress’s mission to lobby the University Administration and the Board of Regents to create positive change for staff members of the university. There are two considerations I would like to bring to the table for discussion to directly benefit MSU’s staff: First, it is time that Murray State’s pay plan be reviewed and revised to allow staff to negotiate pay when they receive a transfer or promotion. The current system impedes economic mobility of our staff and does not take into account years of service or the profound institutional knowledge that many of our staff carry that keep the system running. Second, I believe that the preparedness and response to the COVID-19 pandemic has proven that the University community is ready for more flexible work schedules after the pandemic has subsided. Among these, I believe that Staff Congress should push for the availability of both flexible hours and “work from home” days in the future (so long as public facing offices are appropriately staffed and there a clear lines of communication with those working from home).

2. Please list work experience and community involvement.

Brett is a candidate in the Executive/Managerial/Professional category.
